FALLS CHURCH, Va. (Oct. 22, 2026) – Recognized for his technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and drive to continually challenge himself, Nathaniel Magner has been named the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) 2026 HVAC Apprentice of the Year. The award, sponsored by PHCC Corporate Partner Rheem, was presented recently during PHCC CONNECT 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Magner, who is completing his HVAC apprenticeship through CroppMetcalfe Academy in Virginia, has built a strong foundation of technical knowledge and hands-on skills during his six years in the industry. He approaches his work with professionalism, curiosity, and a desire to understand not just how HVAC systems work but why they work.
That curiosity has helped Magner become a strong troubleshooter and diagnostician. He applies what he learns in the classroom directly to his work in the field, where he diagnoses system issues, develops solutions, and communicates technical information clearly to customers and fellow technicians.
His ability to identify root causes and attention to detail also have served him well in HVAC skills competitions. In 2025, as a third-year apprentice, he traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida, to compete in the Elite Trades Championship, earning third place nationally. He particularly valued the competition’s focus on diagnostics and troubleshooting, skills that closely mirror the challenges he encounters in his day-to-day work.
Earlier this year, Magner competed in the PHCC’s redesigned National HVAC Apprentice Competition in Deadwood, South Dakota. He embraced the opportunity to expand his skills – particularly in commercial HVAC – and found the experience both challenging and rewarding.
Beyond his technical abilities, Magner is recognized by co-workers and supervisors for his positive attitude and willingness to help others. He regularly assists fellow technicians and mentors less experienced co-workers, contributing to a collaborative work environment. His friendly demeanor, integrity, and professionalism also have earned the respect of customers and colleagues.
Magner did not initially plan to pursue a career in HVAC. After working in retail and warehouse positions, he accepted an opportunity with CroppMetcalfe and quickly discovered a profession that matched his interests and talents. What began as a job developed into a career he finds rewarding, particularly the opportunity to solve problems, help customers, and continue mastering a highly technical trade.
“Nate is one of those special people who comes around every so often. Not only does he have a great set of core values, but he is also a legitimately good person,” says CroppMetcalfe President Tim Cropp. “He pushes himself to learn new skills and absorb as much knowledge as possible. Nate is a great example of what an apprentice should be.”
