When PHCC members are asked what they value most from their membership, industry representation consistently rises to the top. They know that PHCC is their voice – fighting for their businesses on everything from energy policy to workforce development.
But here’s the truth: our advocacy only works with your help. No one tells your story better than you, our member contractors. Whether it’s explaining how fuel choice legislation affects your daily operations or why federal funding for apprenticeship programs is vital to workforce growth, your real-world perspective is what moves the needle with lawmakers.
Unfortunately, stepping into the world of politics can feel intimidating. You didn’t go to school for public policy, and you’re certainly not a trained lobbyist. But don’t let that stop you … PHCC has your back.
When we ask members to speak out – at a state capitol or in Washington, D.C. – you’re not doing it alone. Our Government Affairs team provides everything you need: background on the issues, introductions to legislators, advocacy training, and even one-on-one coaching.
Just ask the attendees at this year’s PHCC Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. We offered insider political analysis from a former Congressman, hosted an issues briefing with top lobbyists, and offered personalized prep sessions for meetings with lawmakers. And, once again, we leveraged easy-to-use technology to streamline schedules and help attendees navigate Capitol Hill. The result? Contractors left confident, informed, and energized. They weren’t just business owners; they became advocates.
Bringing That Energy to the State Level
National efforts matter, but local action is key. PHCC chapters play a critical role in influencing state policies that directly affect contractors, and we are so proud of the many successes accomplished by our chapter partners. Here are a few examples of tactics that can make a powerful impact at home:
- Build Relationships Before You Need Them. The most effective advocacy starts with relationship-building – long before a critical vote is on the table. Be a familiar, trusted face … not just a request in their inbox.
- Learn to Speak Their Language. Lawmakers respond to clear, personal stories that connect legislation to real-world impact. Share how a proposed change would affect you, your workers, or the local economy. Try to avoid technical jargon, though.
- Leverage Diverse Voices. On page 31 of this edition of Solutions, PHCC of Massachusetts shares how bringing a diversity of perspectives gives your message more credibility and strength. As that chapter’s Kate Tynan says: “We’re all wanting the same outcomes and fighting the same issues.” Plus, lawmakers want to hear from a wide cross-section of their constituents.
- Use Digital Tools to Organize and Mobilize. Whether it’s a mobile app, email platform, or social media group, technology makes it easier than ever to organize a campaign, schedule meetings, and get your message out fast.
- Track and Share Your Impact. After a meeting or campaign, track the outcome. Share and celebrate those wins – even small ones. It builds momentum and shows that advocacy works.
You don’t need to be a policy expert to make a difference. You just need to show up, speak up, and share your experience. As PHCC has proven time and again … when contractors lead the conversation, real change happens.
