The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) 2015-2021 Chief Executive Officer Michael Copp was awarded the prestigious Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) Public Service Award on Nov. 16 during the AHRI virtual Leadership Forum. This award acknowledges individuals who make significant contributions to the North American HVACR and water heating industry and in furthering AHRI goals.

“It is especially important to recognize the leaders who drive growth in the HVACR and water heating industry, as they serve as positive examples for others,” said AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurek. “AHRI congratulates this year’s award recipients, and we are very grateful for their dedication and hard work, which has helped make life better for Americans and people all across the globe.”

In an official award notification letter, Copp was praised for his numerous contributions to the industry: “Your many years of service, both with PHCC and before that with the National Association of Home Builders, have immeasurably strengthened our industry, particularly in the area of education and training but also by your commitment to industry collaboration and unity. You have built a legacy of service and trust that is recognized through this award by your many friends both within and outside of AHRI, and you will be sorely missed, even as we wish you all the best in your retirement.”

During his tenure at PHCC, Copp was key in leading future-focused strategies as the organization fulfilled its mission of protecting public health and safety and the environment. Under his leadership, the organization made progress on the following:

  • Expanded HVAC-specific resources & collaborative efforts
  • Built a new Education and Training department for members
  • Created workforce development initiatives
  • Launched several online member communities
  • Elevated marketing efforts, including a new quarterly magazine
  • Offered several new member benefits
  • Established a cloud-based IT system

Of particular interest to AHRI, Copp realigned and strengthened PHCC’s relationship with industry partners and coalitions, including the HVACR Alliance.  Additionally, he oversaw a substantial update of the association’s history book, “A Heritage Unique.”

As 2019-2020 PHCC President Hunter Botto reflects, “Thanks to his leadership, PHCC made considerable progress in fulfilling important strategic goals and positioning PHCC members as the ‘contractors of choice’ in their markets…”

In a thank you note provided to AHRI, Copp said: “Just a quick note to thank you and say I am honored to receive this AHRI award from you – thank you! We here at PHCC also appreciate all that you do on behalf of our great industry. It’s a team effort!”

Copp is slated to retire from PHCC in December 2021. PHCC congratulates Michael for this well-deserved honor!
