Tornado? Missing Crate? No Problem!
Foundation Volunteers Deliver SkillsUSA Championships

Foundation volunteers set up, run and judge the National SkillsUSA Plumbing Championship and assist with the HVAC competition. These dedicated individuals are known for their ability to get things done “behind the scenes” so the event goes flawlessly for the competitors.

During setup this year, hundreds of guests from a nearby water amusement park flooded into the Kentucky Expo Center when a tornado warning forced them to seek the nearest available shelter. The committee took it all in stride, with their cell phones borrowed by teens in dripping swimsuits being used to call parents.

Many of the materials for the contests are stored by the SkillsUSA organization in Kentucky to reduce shipping costs. This year as the contestant work benches were being assembled by our volunteers, it became clear that a crate was missing – with legs for half the benches! Quick action from the volunteers and a responsive SkillsUSA crew soon had brand new legs being fixed to the remaining benches.

The contestants may not know the adventures behind the competition, but our volunteers deserve a huge THANK YOU for being problem solvers and hard workers. The event could not happen without them!

Our thanks also to our sponsors, especially AB&I Foundry, American Supply Association, A.O. Smith, Bradford White, Brasscraft, Copper Development Association, Kohler, Tyler Pipe and Coupling, Viega and Zoeller.

Get Strategic! Lessons from Our Last Workshop
Instructor and Sign at Strategic Management Workshop

“There’s no room in our company for brilliant jerks!” shared instructor Nate Koejte at the Foundation’s two-day workshop for contractor business owners and key employees. “We love having sharp employees, but not if it comes with the baggage of an ego or abusive attitude. Simply stating this as a company rule can do a lot to change the behavior of your employees.”

Dozens of simple tips to improve recruiting, company culture and build a successful company were shared by Koejte and lead instructor Kirk Alter during the Foundation’s Strategic Management Workshop. The class ran June 21 & 22 in Nashua, New Hampshire at Viega’s Training Center. The attendees also left with a business plan targeting goals for the next 3-5 years and the methods they will use to reach those goals.

Seeking HVAC Apprentices for National Contest

The Foundation’s Plumbing Apprentice contest is full, but a few spots remain for the HVAC Contest happening at CONNECT 2019 in Indianapolis.

We are looking for some top apprentices to accept the challenge of this 2-day competition, representing their state, their company, and most importantly, themselves and all their expertise and skill.

The Foundation and our sponsors invest in these contests each year to highlight the opportunities available through our local apprentice programs and to encourage the development of the next generation of plumbing and HVAC professionals.

To get details on who can compete and how to register, please follow the links below to the Foundation web site.
