PHCC chapters and contractors have implemented several effective workforce development initiatives that could be adapted in your area. Here are a few samples:
- Finding Qualified Employees: A Case Study
PHCC Member Sam Dowdy has his pick of qualified tech hires for the next three years. Here’s how he did it.
- Promoting a Modern Profession (PHCC of Indiana)
PHCC of Indiana has launched a marketing campaign to attract a new generation to the “modern profession of plumbing.” The program matches young people interested in a p-h-c career with current PHCC of Indiana members.
- “Ride and Decide” Experience (PHCC of Tennessee)
There’s no time like summer break for high school students to try out a career in the p-h-c profession. PHCC of Tennessee’s “Ride and Decide” program pairs students with industry contractors to allow them to experience the trade while assisting in paid work functions during the summer.
- “Earn While You Learn” (PHCC of Georgia)
PHCC of Georgia launched two programs to help students learn plumbing skills while working for a PHCC contractor sponsor. Students can attend a plumbing course that combines local classroom training courses with on-the-job training, or an eLearning plumbing course that allows students who work and live farther away to finish their schooling and work toward becoming licensed contractors.
- Influencing Workforce Development Legislation (PHCC of Virginia)
PHCC of Virginia successfully advocated for workforce legislation that includes initiatives to dramatically increase apprenticeships, incentivize veteran hiring, offer financial aid for non-credit certification training at community colleges and redirect federal funds to education and training. - Supporting New Laws to Drive Workforce Development (PHCC of Colorado)
With bipartisan support, Colorado recently enacted a series of eight bills calling for new workforce development initiatives, services, and grant programs. Developed in collaboration with the PHCC of Colorado, the laws showcase a variety of strategies, including creating new skilled worker outreach efforts, grants for innovative training programs, and other activities.
