This week the Union-Affiliated Contractors (UAC) met with General President William P. Hite and the heads of the UA Training Department during the UA’s Instructor Training Week in Ann Arbor, Mich., to discuss how UAC plans to support the new UA Standards of Excellence.

UAC Chairman Tom Gent and UAC trustees S.J. Peters, PAMCANI, Illinois; Lori Abbott, Abbott industries, Bensenville, Ill,; Ray Hefner, Plumbing Industry Council, St. Louis, Mo.; and UAC Executive Director Rodney Jones were in attendance.   Chairman Gent thanked General President Hite for the opportunity to meet and discuss this important initiative.

UAC Executive Director Rodney Jones presented a power point program on the various aspects of UAC’s plan to implement the Standards of Excellence.  The plan addresses all levels from the apprentice, journeyman, union leadership, contractors, owners and general public. It suggests how to best utilize the themes and content of the policy. The UA members in attendance were pleased with the direction UAC is headed.

The UAC’s next step is to develop an Action Paper, which will be reviewed by General President Hite. The Action Paper is expected to be available to members within the next 60 days.
Lori Abbott commented, “The UA lit the torch with the Standard of Excellence and now we want to see what we can do to carry the torch forward.”

The UA believes the Standard of Excellence is a powerful and new story for union construction to tell. It is a story about accountability, responsibility and performance. It is vital that this story be used to change perceptions about union construction and address concerns of prospective clients, contractors and the business community.

The UAC is an enhanced service group of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association.  The primary mission of UAC focuses on continued development of strong working relationships with local and international leaders of the United Association.  For more information, call (888)997-0535, go to the Web at http://www.phccweb.org, or e-mail jones@naphcc.org.
