The Great Need for PHCC's Political Action Committee
June 27, 2017
All business – including PHCC members are not independent of the political process. We must operate within a realm that is governed by rules, regulations and decisions that are made by lawmakers. In order to be able to make these decisions, elected officials must be apprised of all of the facts surrounding the issues. It is our responsibility to educate them on the issues that affect our industry. It is our duty to ensure that candidates who understand and agree with our issues are elected into office. As a leader in our industry, we can and should be a leader in advocating our point of view in the political arena to help create public policy solutions.
It is critical that PHCC support candidates who support PHCC’s mission - to be the ones making the decisions that affect the plumbing-heating-cooling industry, so we have to do what we can to ensure their election or re-election. However, through the last seven years, less than 2% of the PHCC membership contribute to PHCC’s political action committee (and it’s often the same people). Out of a membership of 3,000 – that’s only 60 people. According to statistics, only 3% to 11% of any association's membership actually contributes to a PAC – this is unacceptable.
A fully funded candidate is at the heart of every successful election. Companies are prohibited by law from making direct contributions to candidates; however, political action committees through PHCC National are able to fund selected candidates to help them get elected. PHCC-PAC honors any contribution – from $5 to $1,000…we always want the largest audience possible – and the most amount of people to be involved. Lawmakers are concerned more with pleasing a large group of constituents and hearing what they want and think, than acting on behalf of just one individual.
That is why the PHCC has PHCC-PAC. We want our members to be successful and a part of achieving that success is advocating for our industry in the political arena. It is important to have officials in office who are supportive of our business and understand our concerns and issues. We must ensure that these candidates are funded by us so that they can run a successful election or re-election campaign, remain in office, and continue to help us advocate for a positive business environment for our company and industry.
As a leader in our industry, we can and should be a leader in advocating our point of view in the political arena to help create public policy solutions.
The impact of a PAC contribution made on behalf of a large number of individuals is significant. A PAC combines the concerns and interests of an elected official’s constituents into one cohesive voice. That unified voice carries far greater power than any single individual.
