PHCC Among Panel Working Together On Solutions to Workforce Shortage
Jan. 17, 2017
PHCC—National President-elect Laurie Crigler and PHCC Executive Vice President Michael Copp were among about 30 industry participants participating in an executive roundtable at Design & Construction Week® (DCW); PHCC was a sponsor of DCW, held last week in Orlando, Florida.
The construction industry labor shortage was the primary discussion topic of the roundtable. After hearing strategies from speakers from ACE Mentor Program of America, This Old House and the Skilled Labor Foundation, each participating association shared how their organizations are addressing this crucial problem and discussed ways to collaborate on solutions in the future.
In addition, the panel discussed key issues expected in 2017, including tax reform strategies and immigration and infrastructure issues across the country.
PHCC’s representatives left the event with a handful of next steps and plan to continue collaborating with other panelists. Some workforce-related ideas include setting up discussions with the Dept. of Education, sharing workforce development collaterals amongst the participating organizations and hosting national events to bring attention to the issue. “This group alone probably represented about 2 million people,” says Crigler. “If together we can organize and leverage some of these ideas, we could make a very powerful impact.”
