PHCC Asks VP Biden to Help Spread the Word of the Professionalism of the Industry

Dear Vice President Biden,

Thank you for acknowledging the intelligence of plumbing professionals in your May 22 remarks at Keene State College in New Hampshire. We appreciate you saying that “there are an awful lot of smart plumbers” because we certainly know a lot of them, as well. As America’s first and foremost trade association dedicated to the construction industry, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) represents some of the most qualified and dedicated plumbing professionals in the nation.

Since 1883, PHCC members have played a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and comfort of society and the protection of the environment. Unfortunately, the plumbing trade, in particular, does not always get the respect it deserves, and is the victim of many disparaging remarks. For example, while we believe the statement was not illintended, many people may have misinterpreted your remarks about “all kidding aside,” when referring to plumbers’ qualifications to be president of the United States. This only reinforces the stereotypical image of a plumber.

In your role as vice president, we are asking your help in conveying the professionalism of our industry when any opportunity arises. We are hopeful that you can be our ally from a personal perspective, as well. According to an Oct. 23, 2008, New York Times article, your father at one time commuted to Wilmington, Del., to clean boilers for a heating and cooling company as a temporary avenue for steady work. Through this experience, you and your family certainly had firsthand exposure to the contributions our members make to protect our safety and quality of life.
