2012 State of the Union – What will be in it for PHCC?
In an election year, a President will typically use the State of the Union Address to begin to frame the issues they will use in their re-election bid. With the President’s State of the Union Address only hours away (9 p.m. ET), what will the President speak about of direct interest to PHCC members? Here’s what PHCC expects:
Along with education and training, technology, manufacturing and energy development, expect the President to discuss small business job creation to spur the economy and listen for certain buzz terms that he will use to benefit small business, such as:
• Health coverage affordability
• Affordable energy
• Access to capital
• Regulatory relief and restraint
• Tax code stability and no tax increases
Also expect the President to shift his rhetoric as a plan to run “against” Congress.
What else should we listen for? Coming on the heels of President Obama’s announcement to raise the U.S. Small Business Administration to a cabinet level position/department, expect the President to discuss a proposal to reorganize federal government departments. The proposal will consolidate six agencies into one to promote competitiveness and American business. The proposal will consolidate the U.S. Department of Commerce’s core business and trade functions, the Small Business Administration, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Export-Import Bank, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. Is this significant? It fulfills one of the President’s pledges to cut government spending and streamline government processes.
