With nationwide focus on workforce development and apprenticeship programs, the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) Educational Foundation was particularly pleased to celebrate valued program instructors last week, honoring John Williams with its Plumbing Instructor of the Year Award at the CONNECT conference and tradeshow in San Antonio, Texas. Co-sponsored by CONTRACTOR magazine, this award recognizes instructors who have dedicated their careers to enriching the lives of plumbing students through outstanding instruction in their field.
Described as a “one in a million instructor,” Williams teaches in the PHCC of Iowa Apprenticeship Program as well as at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, a “crossover” benefiting students in both programs.
“John will always make time to work with students, colleagues, and anyone interested in the trade to explain what we do and help them understand the importance of having qualified individuals working in our trade,” said Rick Gustin, apprenticeship committee chair for the PHCC of Iowa program. “He is a great ambassador for the industry, and it is hard to find someone else that cares as much as he does.”
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Williams organizes a STEM day collaboration for middle school girls each year, focusing on introducing and exposing them to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This year, he brought in Level 4 apprentices with tools and materials to walk the students through the process of building iPad holders from PVC piping.
“Not only is it introducing the career of plumbing to the middle schoolers, but it is also giving an amazing experience to our Level 4 [apprentices],” Gustin added, explaining they gain the experience of being teachers rather than students. “This is valuable because they will soon be the Journeyman teaching their own apprentices on the job.”
